Short answer
WhatsApp groups are free and every parent already has WhatsApp, which makes them quick for announcements. They expose everyone's phone number, bury important messages, and keep no record per student. A school app costs money and needs installing, but keeps numbers private and ties messages to attendance, homework, fees, and results.
Side by side
| Class WhatsApp group | School app | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | A yearly fee |
| Setup for parents | Already installed | Install the app and sign in once |
| Phone numbers | Every member sees every number | Kept private |
| Important notices | Lost among forwards and replies | Arrive as their own notification |
| One-to-one questions | Parents message teachers' personal numbers | Messages inside the app, during set hours |
| Record kept by the school | None; it lives on members' phones | Kept with the student's record |
| Attendance, homework, fees, results | Typed out or sent as photos | Shown for each child automatically |
| When a teacher leaves | They stay in the group with the numbers | Access ends with their account |
When a WhatsApp group is fine
For a small school with a few classes, or for one-off reminders such as a picnic, a WhatsApp group set to admins-only messages can work well and costs nothing. Keep it for announcements, never for fees or a child's personal matters.
When a school app pays off
- Parents need to see their own child's attendance, homework, fees, and results, not the whole class's.
- Teachers are tired of messages on their personal numbers at night.
- The school wants a record of what was communicated, for disputes or audits.
- Fees should be paid online, with receipts and reminders handled for you.
Running both during the switch
Many schools keep the WhatsApp group for a term while parents install the app, then move notices to the app and turn the group into announcements only. Telling parents what will come through the app, such as attendance alerts, results, and fee receipts, gets them to install it.
Where EduRit fits
EduRit is a school app and dashboard: notices, attendance alerts, homework, results, online fees, and teacher–parent messages without shared numbers. It doesn't send WhatsApp or SMS messages; parents get push notifications from the EduRit Android app, and iPhone users use it in the browser.
